چکیده

We analyse the spatial clustering properties of a new catalogue of very rich galaxy clusters selected from the APM Galaxy Survey. These clusters are of comparable richness and space density to Abell Richness Class ≥ 1 clusters, but selected using an objective algorithm from a catalogue demonstrably free of artificial inhomogeneities. Evaluation of the two-point correlation function ξ cc (r) for the full sample and for richer subsam-ples reveals that the correlation amplitude is consistent with that measured for lower richness APM clusters and X-ray selected clusters. We apply a maxmimum likelihood estimator to find the best fitting slope and amplitude of a power law fit to ξ cc (r), and to estimate the correlation length r 0 (the value of r at which ξ cc (r) is equal to unity). For clusters with a mean space density of 1.6 × 10 −6 h 3 Mpc −3 (equivalent to the space density of Abell Richness ≥ 2 clusters), we find r 0 = 21.3 +11.1 −9.3 h −1 Mpc (95% confidence limits). This is consistent with the weak richness dependence of ξ cc (r) expected in Gaussian models of structure formation. In particular, the amplitude of ξ cc (r) at all richnesses matches that of ξ cc (r) for clusters selected in N-Body simulations of a low density Cold Dark Matter model.

The APM/Matched-Filter Cluster Catalog

A catalog of nearby clusters in the 5800 deg area in the southern Galactic cap is constructed by applying a matched-filter clusterfinding algorithm to the sample of 3.3 million galaxies from the APM Galaxy Survey. I have preliminarily detected more than 4000 cluster candidates with estimated redshift of less than 0.2 and with richness similar to those of ACO clusters. Generally, a good correspo...

The APM cluster - galaxy cross - correlation function : Constraints on Ω and galaxy bias

We estimate the cluster-galaxy cross-correlation function (ξcg), from the APM galaxy and galaxy cluster surveys. We obtain estimates both in real space from the inversion of projected statistics and in redshift space using the galaxy and cluster redshift samples. The amplitude of ξcg is found to be almost independent of cluster richness. At large separations, r ∼> 5 h Mpc ( h = H0/100km s , whe...

Richness is a key defining characteristic of a galaxy cluster. We measure the optical richness of galaxy clusters from the CNOC1 cluster redshift survey using the galaxy-cluster center correlation amplitude Bgc. We show that the Bgc values measured using photometric catalogs are consistent with those derived from redshift catalogs, indicating that richness can be measured reliably from photomet...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...

The Dependence of Tidally-Induced Star Formation on Cluster Density

A survey of Hα emission in 320 spiral galaxies in 8 nearby clusters shows an enhancement of circumnuclear starburst emission with increasingly rich clusters. These observations provide convincing evidence that spirals have been transformed into S0s in clusters predominantly by tidal forces, a picture fully in accord with the most recent numerical simulations of clusters. For the richest cluster...
